Since joining Manchester United a year ago, Patrick Dorgu has divided opinions.
He’s impressed in the past few weeks following an inconsistent few months before that. Multiple aspects of his game have been questioned, although he shone recently when played further forward.
As the 21-year-old looks to stabilise his form at Manchester United, Lecce president Sticchi Damiani has spoken about the move to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils’ €30m offer last year clearly shocked the Italian. Dorgu’s departure hurt Lecce but the money on the table was simply too good.
He told TuttoSport in an interview: “It hurt because I had to contradict myself. I truly thought I wouldn’t be selling anyone in January, but we didn’t expect that increase from United. We were also taken aback by the English club’s absolute unwillingness to postpone the deal until the following June.”
Damiani believes Lecce didn’t drop too much after losing Dorgu.
“Technically, we were comfortable. We had Pierotti, who was ready. At that historic moment, Dorgu was paradoxically a replaceable player. Despite his great value, because he was systematically deployed on the right, as an inverted winger. A position in which he lost much of his potential.”

Over the past few weeks, Dorgu has played on the right wing more often under Amorim. Damiani believes this will bring the best out of the player.
“I’m seeing him back in his natural position in Manchester, where he devastates opponents.”
The Denmark international found the back of the net against Wolves, though the referee disallowed the goal for offside. He also came up with a fine back-post finish against Scotland back in November. And of course there was his great goal against Newcastle United last week.
