Watford look very likely to lose Nestory Irankunda, with the Championship club now edging towards an agreement with Sporting. This comes after fresh progress in negotiations.
Earlier this week, reports from Portugal revealed Sporting had opened talks before following up with a proposal worth €15m (£13m) plus bonuses. In addition, the latest update suggests the deal is now entering its final stages.
According to Record, Sporting’s package of €15m (£13m) plus €5m (£4.3m) in performance-related bonuses has gone a long way towards meeting Watford’s demands. As a result, the Portuguese club is hopeful the transfer can be wrapped up by the end of the week.
So only 24 hours after Sporting’s improved offer was revealed, Portuguese reports now suggest attention has shifted towards finalising the agreement. Their focus is also on arranging the player’s trip to Lisbon.
Medical expected soon
The report claims Irankunda is already waiting for permission to travel to Lisbon. There is the possibility of arriving this weekend to undergo his medical if the final details are signed off.
That marks another step forward after Sporting submitted their opening proposal, with negotiations now appearing to be focused on completing the transfer rather than bridging a significant financial gap.
Record adds Irankunda remains Sporting’s preferred option for the position. Nevertheless, the Portuguese club continue to monitor alternative targets in case negotiations break down.
Rival interest remains
There is still competition, however. O Jogo confirmed the claims that Celta Vigo have also seen a €12m (£10.4m) bid rejected by Watford.
Sporting were also said to have had an offer at that level turned down before increasing their proposal to the current €15m (£13m) plus €5m (£4.3m) in add-ons.
The Portuguese newspaper adds that talks between Sporting and Watford are expected to intensify over the coming hours.
The latest reporting points towards the transfer entering its final phase. Sporting have increased their offer, Watford are considering the package, and preparations for Irankunda’s arrival in Lisbon are already beginning.
