Tottenham defender Cuti Romero’s phone is currently ‘burning’ as Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone pulls out all the stop to get him.

That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who report that the Tottenham defender is a priority target for the Spanish side and Simeone is using all of his contacts to make it happen.

The newspaper explains that Atlético have an advantage when it comes to Romero, and that is the pulling power of Simeone. He has ‘rolled up his sleeves’ to sign the Tottenham defender.

He did this to sign Julian Alvarez last summer, a deal that was seen as impossible, and he’s willing to do it again with Romero.

MD cite information from journalist Gastón Edul, who says that Romero’s ‘phone is burning’ at this moment in time as Simeone puts his contacts to work. They are working to convince Romero on the move.

It’s a trick he has used before, with Alvarez reportedly telling Giuliano Simeone last summer, when he was at the Olympics, that a transfer was “all done, I’m going to Atlético, tell your father not to write to me anymore.”

Some reports in Argentina have already claimed that Atlético have the Tottenham defender’s approval. Either way, Simeone is using his contacts to full power.

The bigger issue is striking an agreement with Tottenham. They want €60m for the Argentine centre-back. Negotiating with them isn’t easy, even with the very good relations between both clubs.

Atlético need to present a huge offer to convince Tottenham, but they are confident that the player’s desire to change will be a key factor in pushing things over the line.
