Tottenham Hotspur summer signing Bryan Gil has emerged as a surprise candidate for Barcelona.
The La Liga side are looking to bolster their attack in January after scoring only 22 goals in all competitions this season.
Even before Barca sacked Ronald Koeman, it was made clear in the Catalan media that the Spanish club will need to bring in reinforcements. Xavi Hernández’s appointment hasn’t changed their plans as they continue to be linked with various attacking players.
Gil has now become the latest name, according to Fichajes.net, who say the 20-year-old arrived in north London at the request of Nuno Espírito Santo.
He struggled to enjoy minutes under the Portuguese coach, who was sacked by Spurs, and the situation didn’t immediately improve upon Antonio Conte’s arrival at the club. ‘A total wasted talent’, says the website when describing Gil’s initial months at Tottenham.
Barca ‘want to request’ Gil on loan in January. The ‘good news’ for the Camp Nou side is the Spaniard’s salary [€2.5m per year] is affordable for them. Spurs ‘would not object’ to the loan transfer until the end of the season, as long as the player ‘asks to leave’.
If it happens, then Tottenham want Barca to pay his salary during the temporary stay, which would be around €1.5m. A loan move to the Camp Nou will help Gil’s chances of featuring regularly, something that he has struggled to enjoy in England so far.
Having brought him in a few months ago, it would really be a surprise if Fabio Paratici and Spurs were to let Gil go out on loan in January.
