Tottenham are considering making an offer for Boca Juniors youngster Leonel Flores in the next transfer window, according to the latest word from Argentina.
That’s a small but useful step forward from where this story was last week. Spurs were initially said to be keeping an eye on the 19-year-old, but there was nothing concrete behind it.
Sport Witness then learned that Flores wasn’t leaving in the final days of the summer window. Any move would have to wait until January or the summer of 2027.
El Intransigente is now pointing directly at that next window. They say Tottenham are thinking about making an offer for the forward when the market opens again.
There’s still nothing on Boca’s table, but the suggestion is Spurs could eventually turn their interest into something more serious.
Riquelme: “He’s not leaving”
Juan Román Riquelme’s initial response sounds quite clear. “He’s not leaving,” is how El Intransigente presents the Boca president’s position.
Dig a little deeper into the report, though, and things aren’t quite that simple. Boca don’t want to sell Flores right now. That makes sense. He’s only just broken into Rodolfo Arruabarrena’s team and has worked his way in the pecking order.
Still, the door isn’t completely shut. El Intransigente says a big enough offer could change the situation and leave Riquelme with a decision to make. So “he’s not leaving” may really mean “he’s not leaving cheaply”.
January could make things interesting
Tottenham aren’t there yet. They haven’t made an offer and, for now, they’re still watching Flores and considering their next move.
Boca aren’t under any pressure either. The youngster has a contract until December 2029 and previous reports have put his release clause at around €13m (£11.3m).
His rise explains why clubs are looking. Flores scored 19 goals and added five assists in 51 matches for Boca’s reserves before making the jump to manager Rodolfo Arruabarrena’s first team.
Interestingly, he played as a number 9 in the reserves, but is often being deployed as a right winger in the senior team. That’s mostly due to his deadly 1v1 skills and aggressiveness towards the box. So this is a very versatile young attacker we’re talking about.
In the end, the Argentine press now says Tottenham could actually put money on the table when the next window opens. If they do, we’ll find out just how firm Riquelme’s “he’s not leaving” really is.
