On deadline day of the summer window, Newcastle United allowed Martin Dúbravka to join Manchester United on a season-long loan deal.
The goalkeeper’s loan transfer saw the Magpies sign Loris Karius for free last September.
Newcastle had confirmed Karius’ deal lasts until January and they have an option to extend it further until the end of this season.
The former Liverpool man has not made a single appearance for Eddie Howe’s side. The competition at St James’ Park has increased after Dúbravka’s loan stay at Old Trafford was cut short earlier this month.
Newcastle, meanwhile, ‘have agreed’ to extend Karius’ deal until the end of this season. That’s at least what Sky Deutschland are reporting and they further add ‘talks are already planned’ between the two parties to discuss a long-term contract.
Nick Pope is the first-choice stopper and has starred for Newcastle this season, conceding 11 goals and keeping 11 clean sheets from 19 league games. He has also kept three clean sheets in the EFL Cup.
With Karius’ extension and Dúbravka’s return, the duo, along with Karl Darlow, will have to fight to become the second-choice goalkeeper at the Tyneside club.
