Botafogo’s move for Nottingham Forest midfielder Danilo is very close to be sealed, and Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte has refined the story.
It brought new details about the behind-the-scenes efforts that led to the deal being set up, with manager Davide Ancelotti playing a key role in convincing the player to join Botafogo.
Although the Brazilian club had reached an understanding with Forest and the player’s representatives earlier in the week, Danilo himself had hesitated due to his strong identification with Palmeiras, the club that developed him. It took a direct phone call from Ancelotti to tip the balance.
The conversation reportedly took place on Thursday afternoon, with the Italian coach – the son of Carlo Ancelotti, yes – explaining his vision for Danilo’s role and how he planned to use the midfielder within Botafogo’s tactical setup. This personal outreach was key to overcoming the player’s initial reluctance.
Globo Esporte highlights that Danilo now sees the move as the right step in his career, even while maintaining respect for his past with Palmeiras. He is expected in Rio de Janeiro by Sunday to complete the formalities and sign a four-year deal.
The agreement between Botafogo and Nottingham Forest involves a €22 million package (around £18.5 million), including fixed fees, bonuses and performance clauses. Importantly, the deal is fully structured between Danilo and Botafogo, with no link to Lyon or other clubs under the Eagle Football umbrella, as we reported.
Ancelotti’s influence wasn’t limited to the final push. Following Botafogo midfielder Gregore’s transfer to Al-Rayyan, he was also the one to recommend going to the market instead of relying solely on internal options.
While Allan, a player Ancelotti and his father had previously worked with at Napoli and Everton, was considered the immediate replacement, Danilo was identified as the top target to elevate the midfield’s long-term quality.
Now, with full agreement close and only formal steps remaining, the move appears to be heading towards completion.
