Monaco midfielder Fabinho has given an interview to Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte on Tuesday. The player mostly talked about his chances of going to the World Cup, which he claims to be ‘hopeful’ of.
But transfers were obviously also a subject, and this is a man who has been involved in lots of rumours in the past few windows.
Linked to several European giants, the Brazilian seemed close to a departure from Monaco last summer, but saw his move being blocked by his own club.
In their story, Globo Esporte claims that Manchester City and Paris Saint Germain both made offers for him, and Fabinho replied: “I was very close to one of them, but Monaco blocked me a little and didn’t want to let me out, claiming that I was an important player for the team. So, as much as I wanted to leave, I did everything to get out, I could not.”
But then he confirmed it was not to Pep Guardiola’s side that he was close on heading to: “Yeah. (The bid) Was to stay in French football.”
Then asked about a departure in the January window, Fabinho claims that leaving the club in the middle of the season is not really his intention, although a move in a few months isn’t ruled out.
“I have no thought of leaving now. The team would also hardly let me go, just for a very unusual sum of money. I will work. Maybe in the summer market there will be other opportunities.
“If good things come up like they did last year I’m going to sit down to talk to the club and see if we can find a way that pleases all parties.”
Besides Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal were both said to be pretenders last summer as well.
