Ajax are considering bringing West Ham United midfielder Edson Álvarez back to the club this summer.

That’s according to Voetbal International, who report that the Dutch giants have set their sights on the West Ham midfielder in their search for a new number six.

They say that the Mexican is a key candidate for the role but due to Ajax’s financial limitations, a deal will not be easy to get done. They need players to leave before they can pursue a deal with West Ham.

Ajax need to sign a midfielder to make up for the loss of Jordan Henderson, with manager John Heitinga alternating between various options for the time being.

The club initially focused on securing other targets, but a controlling midfielder is now at the top of their list of priorities. They want a player with experience and leadership qualities and that’s led them to Álvarez.

The focus is currently on a loan deal, which would allow them to use the West Ham man to help develop talent without getting in their way as well.

The belief is that Álvarez is out of the picture at West Ham, but Ajax need to move players on before they can move, even for a loan deal.
