AS Roma’s need to secure €80m in capital gains by June 30th could give Manchester United an easier path to midfielder Manu Kone or Evan Ndicka.
Il Messaggero report on the situation today and how the red carpet could almost be rolled out for Manchester United this summer.
Incoming revenues
The newspaper explains that Roma are working to cut down that figure as much as possible. They’ve already signed various sponsorship agreements and are hoping for around €15m from Lega Serie A’s deal with IMG.
That will allow them to breathe easier, but sales are likely, particularly if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.
Manu Kone is likely to be the prime candidate for a sale. He has plenty of suitors, including Inter Milan. In fact, according to Il Messaggero, he is the one who is ‘closest to a possible departure’.
Manchester United have been linked for months.
A report all the way back in January named them as suitors alongside PSG, Atletico Madrid and Inter. Three months on, a report again had Manchester United in the mix as it was explained Roma needed sales.
It’s a similar situation with Ndicka. He is also one of the big names that will be ‘forced to say goodbye’ in the coming months. All indications are that the Italian club will open their doors to bids just to help balance the books.
Manchester United needs
Of the two players, Manu Kone makes the most sense for Manchester United. They need a new defensive midfielder this summer with Casemiro departing.
There’s also an expectation that Manuel Ugarte will be moved on as well., subsequently Kone could be the answer. And at 24-years-old, would represent a long-term investment and long-term partner for Kobbie Mainoo.
It all depends on the asking price, which is expected to be €45m. But with Roma desperate for money, that is unlikely to be a fixed price by any means.
Instead, the need for money makes the Frenchman a potential bargain option for Manchester United and others.
