Crystal Palace’s Matheus França is now certain to return to England at the end of his loan, with Brazilian press making it clear that his spell at Vasco da Gama has effectively run its course.
The midfielder arrived in Rio with expectation. He had been sold by Flamengo for €20m (£17m) in 2023 and was seen as a player who could quickly stand out back in Brazil. As we have been following closely, that has not happened.
Instead, his loan has turned into a long struggle for minutes, confidence and relevance.
No space, no impact
According to Brazilian outlet Meia Hora, França simply does not have space in the Vasco squad anymore. That reality has become even clearer in 2026. This year alone, he has played just six matches, showing how far he has fallen in the pecking order.
Across his entire spell, the numbers remain stark. França has made 25 appearances and has not registered a single goal or assist. His average of around 23 minutes per game underlines how little influence he has had, even when selected.
The situation has not improved under new manager Renato Gaúcho. His arrival initially looked like a potential turning point, especially given Vasco’s strong run of form. However, França has not benefited from that momentum and remains on the fringes of the squad.
Expectations never met
França originally joined Vasco at the request of manager Fernando Diniz, who believed the player could add quality in attacking areas. Even under Diniz, though, he struggled to establish himself.
When Renato replaced Diniz, there was a sense that a fresh start could help. Brazilian reports now make it clear that nothing really changed. França has continued to find himself outside the main rotation, with limited chances and even fewer convincing performances. It became a cycle of pressure from which he did not escape.
Adaptation issues are often mentioned as part of the explanation. His return to Brazilian football did not go smoothly, and injuries from his time in England also disrupted his rhythm. Still, the overall assessment is simple: he has not delivered.
Return to Crystal Palace now expected
The loan deal runs until June and does not include an option to buy. That always meant his future depended on performance. Based on what he has shown, Brazilian media now treat his return to Crystal Palace as the most likely outcome.
There is little expectation that he will stay. The club have moved forward without him, and his role has become increasingly marginal.
For Palace, the picture is far from ideal. The loan was meant to rebuild confidence and attacking sharpness. Instead, França is set to return with no output, reduced status, and the same doubts that followed him into Brazil.
At this stage, the loan feels less like a temporary step and more like a missed opportunity that never really took off.
