At the beginning of June, Mateo Joseph spoke to the Spanish media and whilst he detailed his frustrations at not getting more minutes with Leeds United last season, he didn’t talk up a move to Spain or anything like that.
Indeed, it sounded like the 21-year-old was of the mind to stay with the Whites and try his luck in the Premier League following the club’s promotion.
Since then there’s been repeat claims of interest from Real Betis and earlier this week it was reported the Spanish club were in the process of making their first offer for the young attacker.
Betis are notorious for low-ball offers and being difficult to deal with, so it was always questionable whether what they had to offer would suit Leeds United.
Saturday’s edition of their local newspaper Diario de Sevilla states Leeds United are ‘not convinced’ by Betis’ loan plus option to buy offer, and at this stage are reluctant to part with Mateo Joseph.
According to the report, the Whites want to keep him in their squad, with Diario de Sevilla claiming they’ve been told the player’s camp fancies a move to Spanish football.
Real Betis aren’t giving up and contacts remain in place between the two clubs.
