João Virgínia has spoken publicly for the first time since leaving Everton and sealing his return to Sporting, expressing joy at rejoining a club he considers home.
The 25-year-old goalkeeper, who spent the 2021/22 season on loan in Lisbon, said it felt like he had never left. “I’ve only just arrived, but it feels like I never left,” he told Sporting’s official media. “I’m more than adapted to the club and to the reality of playing for Sporting. I couldn’t be happier to wear the shirt again.”
Virgínia left Everton this summer at the end of his contract, bringing an end to a six-year spell in England that began with Arsenal’s academy. He now returns to Portugal with a long-term deal until 2028 and a €60m release clause.
“Since I left, I’ve always wanted to come back,” he said. “This is a club I know well. I already knew most of the players, and this is a place where I was treated very well. It’s in my heart.”
Looking ahead, Virgínia made clear that the goal is to help Sporting chase a third consecutive league title. “When I first came, Sporting had just been crowned champions. Now we’re going for a third in a row, and I’m here to help and fight.”
The goalkeeper also praised new manager Rui Borges, calling him “five stars” after their first conversation. “In my career I’ve worked with some top goalkeepers. Back then it was Antonio Adán, now it’s Rui Silva. I’m sure we’ll get along well.”
He concluded by saying he had followed the team closely during his time away: “I’ve been watching most of the games. Being back after all these years is a huge joy.”
