It’s not often that failed transfers are solely blamed on the manager but for Sevilla director of football Victor Orta, the January deals for Tottenham’s Alejo Veliz and Manchester United’s Hannibal Mejbri are breaking the mold.

That’s at least according to Estadio Deportivo, who report that the double deal has actually earned the Spaniard credit, despite them barely featuring since arriving.

The newspaper covers Orta today and how he’s been given the backing of those in charge, despite constant suggestions that he could be replaced.

They explain that those rumours are more a product of the consistent in-fighting at the Spanish club, who have been locked in something of a civil war at leadership level for months.

And instead of what happened with his predecessor Monchi, those in charge plan to keep him and give him a role in selecting the manager to replace Quique Sanchez Flores in the summer.

Estadio say that Orta has actually been given ‘trust and credit’ from his superiors, who have been impressed by his work to reduce the wage bill and ‘the effort to sign young viable players’.

That includes the deals for Alejo Veliz and Hannibal Mejbri, even though both have barely played since arriving from Tottenham and Manchester United in the January transfer window.

Their lack of minutes has caused plenty of consternation and questions, but it seems Orta has dodged the blame, and the focus is fully on the manager on that particular issue, which Estadio confirm by saying ‘the coach has not considered it appropriate to give them minutes’.

In other words, everyone else at the club is as baffled by the treatment of the Tottenham and Manchester United youngsters and rather than questions being asked of Orta, it’s the manager to blame.
