Everton’s ‘lack of clout’ could be holding up a deal for PSV Eindhoven defender Denzel Dumfries this summer.

That’s according to De Telegraaf, who do not name the Blues specifically but do say that the interested parties in the defender don’t have the power to sign him just yet.

They say that unlike his teammate Donyell Malen, things are ‘quieter’ around the full-back, who PSV are expecting to leave after his performances at the Euros.

While the likes of Everton and Inter have been linked in recent weeks, the ‘lack of clout’ from those interested parties means a deal is not close to being completed.

That’s a line we’ve heard about Everton before now, with it regularly stated in the Netherlands that they’d have to sell players before being able to buy Dumfries.

Eindhovens Dagblad journalist Rik Elfrink, meanwhile, provides a different outlook on the situation in his coverage of it today.

Unlike De Telegraaf, who say the two players have been given until July 22nd to remain out of training to sort a transfer, he says there is no set date for them to return.

According to his information, they could be given the whole of this week to sort things out, but that is ‘depending on their situation in the transfer market’.

“If there is no prospect of a transfer, PSV will train the duo. However, it can also go fast with a transfer if also case manager Mino Raiola gives his blessing,” he says.

That insinuates it’s all down to the super-agent, who we know is usually in control in situations around his clients and has been holding talks over the likes of Dumfries for much of the last two weeks.

Those comments caused something of a stir on social media, though, and according to Voetbal Zone, Elfrink has clarified what he means.

“He does not have the last word,” he is reported as saying. “But he is a factor of importance. Of course, PSV also has a voice. The fact that that has not been explicitly stated does not mean that it is not so.”

So what does that mean for Everton? Well, from the looks of it, they haven’t got the money to give PSV what they want for Dumfries at this moment in time, and neither have Inter Milan.

That’s obviously holding things up, and it seems, while the Dutch club are hoping things are sorted sooner rather than later, until players are moved on from Goodison Park, the situation is unlikely to change.

Even then, it appears they have work to do with Raiola, who, as usual, is controlling pretty much everything going on.
