David Raya initially moved from Brentford to Arsenal on loan, with the transfer becoming permanent around a year later. The Gunners have also been keen on Espanyol’s Joan Garcia, making a failed attempt to sign the highly rated stopper during the last summer window.
It’s not ruled out in Spain that Arsenal return for the Espanyol player in the next window, although there doesn’t appear a desperate need for Mikel Arteta to replace Raya.
Ahead of Arsenal facing PSG in the Champions League, the Gunners are being covered strongly around the European media.
Marca have an article explaining Raya has good statistics in the competition this season, and they throw praise his way.
The Spanish newspaper explain that goalkeeping coach Iñaki Caña moved from Brentford to Arsenal and immediately told Arteta to recruit Raya.
Marca then quote what they say is a source at Arsenal as saying: “The English press wanted to ‘hang’ us because we were bringing in Raya instead of an English goalkeeper, and that was sacrilege.”
That sounds wildly dramatic and over the top, and is likely hyped up for a Spanish audience.
