Following just six appearances in all competitions last season under Ange Postecoglou, Stephen Welsh might have seen Brendan Rodgers’ arrival at Celtic as an opportunity to impress.
However, the reality appears to be very different for the centre-back, who now looks to be on his way out from Parkead this summer.
This comes courtesy of Gazzetta dello Sport, who explain the Celtic defender is a target for two Italian clubs, namely Bologna and Hellas Verona.
The Italian newspaper report Welsh ‘would have expressed his intention to change scenery’ in order to find regular minutes elsewhere.
This is where the Serie A sides come in, stating that ‘one of the options would be Bologna’, while Verona have ‘also moved in his footsteps’.
Regarding the amount it would cost to convince Celtic, it’s said the Scottish side appear ‘willing to let him leave with a valuation of around €1.5m’.
This, for a player whose contract with Celtic runs until 2025, shows that an exit would be best for all parties, as there appears to be little chance for Welsh to become a regular under Rodgers next season.
