Celtic were keen on signing Gvidas Gineitis in the summer transfer window. There is still hope of a January transfer.
The Hoops made several offers for the Lithuania international and their attempts stretched on until Italian transfer deadline day. Even on the Scottish deadline day, they were handed hope of executing a deal but nothing materialised.
This has led to the midfielder losing prominence at Torino, who signed Daniel Braganca and Rolando Mandragora as replacements.
The player has recently spoken about Celtic’s summer interest and the Glasgow club could yet sign him in a future window.
Hoops haven’t given up
ToroNews report that Gineitis has a lot to improve on but his commitment and professionalism has never been under question. This has made Torino trust him, even if a move to Celtic Park didn’t quite work out.
While he has fallen down the pecking order, he still enjoys the club’s esteem. He will be seen as a reliable squad option until January, when things could change for the Lithuania international.
The outlet make it clear that Celtic have ‘not abandoned’ the idea of signing him. That is why a winter move can’t be ruled out.
Player can make transfer choice
Gineitis spoke to the Lithuanian press over the weekend and ToroNews relay what he said.
“It would be an interesting and positive experience. It would be stimulating to test myself at that level, at that club. But right now, I’m where I am.”
“If Torino wanted to sell me and another club wanted to buy me, the question would be how much they would offer me to play there. It all depends on my final decision.”
The outlet see it as a sign that if the right opportunity comes along, the midfielder will seek an exit. He isn’t frustrated with his life in Turin but everything will come down to what Celtic can offer in January.
Deal could be cheaper
The 22-year-old was valued at around €10m in the summer. That is when he was seen as an important player but now, his valuation is likely to have dropped.
Besides, Gineitis came through the Torino youth academy. Anything they earn will go down as a capital gain.
This would be a positive for Celtic, who should be able to execute a favourable move in January. The player will also get to play in Europe and it will be a career step up for him.
