Teun Koopmeiners was linked with a move to England in the summer and has now attracted interest from Everton and Newcastle United.
The Dutchman joined Juventus from Atalanta in the summer of 2024 for €54.7m. This came right after he thrived in Bergamo, becoming a source for goals and assists under Gian Piero Gasperini.
But things have fallen flat in Turin. He could never impress under Thiago Motta or Igor Tudor, failing to make himself a regular. Things have been a bit better under Luciano Spalletti, who has also used the midfielder as a centre-back due to his ability on the ball. Despite signs of promise, it was clear the Bianconeri would consider a sale to England.
He has also started the season well but it has come in the absence of the injured Khephren Thuram and Manuel Locatelli. Now, his future is being called into question again.
Suitors lining up
Today’s print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport states there have signs of improvement in Koopmeiners but the Juve management feel he isn’t fulfilling the expectations of what was paid for him. That is why they could explore his exit in January.
Their ideal objective would be to execute his permanent sale. CEO Giovanni Carnevali values him at around €25m, which will save the club from a big capital loss. But if nothing moves, a loan exit will also be considered.
The newspaper claim that Everton and Newcastle United wanted to sign the midfielder late in the summer window. They didn’t make any formal offers but things can change in January.
Juve acknowledge they won’t receive huge offers for Koopmeiners too. That is why they will also consider loans and the same holds true for the Dutchman’s entourage.
At the same time, everything will come down to the player. If he can finally convince the club about his skillset in the next three months, their stance could change. If not that, he would consider an ‘Erasmus’ abroad for six months and attempt to regain his confidence.
Our take: Loan would be sensible
In the last two years, doubts have risen about Koopmeiners’ physical abilities. His technical skillset is still very valuable and that allows him to play a lot of positions. But he has lost confidence and often looks like a shadow of himself.
This would make a permanent move risky for any club. A loan would be sensible for both Everton and Newcastle United. They’re not playing in Europe and the player could gain some form while being under-the-radar.
It would also give him the motivation to make a mark too. As if he does well in a loan, he could then have a chance to return to Juve or seal a permanent move.
