Wolverhampton Wanderers may have been handed a boost in their potential pursuit of Hugo Ekitike, as VfL Wolfsburg are not actually in the race for him.

That’s according to journalist Florian Plettenberg, who says the German side are not providing competition to Wolves despite reports to the contrary.

Wolves were named as one of the suitors for Ekitike earlier today, with a report in France naming them among the clubs eyeing up a move for the Paris Saint Germain forward this month.

The striker remains out of the picture in Paris and, after turning down moves in the summer, seems determined to secure an exit in this window instead.

Wolves are on the hunt for a new striker after letting Fabio Silva join Rangers on loan, while Sasa Kalajdzic is also expected to depart to get regular gametime ahead of Euro 2024.

That could leave Gary O’Neill short of options, particularly with Hwang Hee-chan heading to the Asian Cup for perhaps a month.

Thus, they are looking at Ekitike but reportedly faced competition from Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt for his signature.

Not according to Plettenberg, though, who says that his information is that the ‘alleged interest’ from Wolfsburg doesn’t exist and ‘there will be no transfer’.

Crucially he doesn’t mention Wolves or Frankfurt so it seems that information may be right at least, but there will be no efforts from Wolfsburg according to him.

That’s potentially good news for Wolves who in the space of a few hours have seen a rival in this developing race drop out completely. They still need to beat Frankfurt, who interestingly have been linked with a move for Kalajdzic, but one competitor rather than two is undoubtedly something to celebrate.
