Torino signed Nathan Patterson from Everton late in the summer transfer window. The deal comes at a critical point for the player’s career.

The right-back constantly faced struggles during his time on Merseyside. Injury derailed his progress, making sure he never quite fulfilled the potential everyone saw at Rangers.

He hadn’t played so far in this campaign and is going to be a squad option for Torino. Sport Witness have covered how the Turin club saw this as a transfer opportunity, as Everton made it easy for them to sign the player.

Now, more is emerging about the transfer.

Belief Toffees transfer was wrong

Tuttomercatoweb’s Marco Conterio reports about the right-back today, noting that the Scotsman was a good dressing room presence at Everton.

Despite that, he could never make an impact on the pitch. It is believed he remained the player he was at Rangers, suggesting the transfer to the Toffees was the ‘wrong choice’.

At the same time, the report believes the move to Torino can go either way. Il Toro want to see him play every week and become a regular down the line. The player also harbours the same intentions and that is an opportunity that will be presented to him.

Torino sporting director Gianluca Petrachi saw this as a chance he couldn’t really miss. Since Patterson has signed a three-year deal, there is only limited pressure on him to make a mark immediately.

Good examples to look to

Several Scottish players have found success in Serie A in recent years. Patterson’s new teammate Che Adams is one, as he has witnessed a resurgence at Torino. Scott McTominay has lit up Naples and Kieron Bowie finds himself at Sassuolo after doing well at Hellas Verona. Lewis Ferguson has also grown significantly at Bologna, where he is club captain.

Clearly, the arrival from Everton has examples around him that will help him. Having Adams in the squad can also go a long way in shaping his spell.

Everything will come down to his fitness, though. The tactical nature of Serie A will come in handy, as he won’t have to cover as much as distance as the Premier League demands.
