Incoming Manchester City director of football Hugo Viana is driving their apparent interest in Sporting Club de Portugal’s Trincao.

That’s according to A Bola, who cover the winger today and the apparent interest from Manchester City ahead of the summer transfer window.

The newspaper explains that Trincao has the most minutes of any Sporting player this season and is ‘standing out’ on the pitch.

That has not gone unnoticed, and he is preparing to stand out in the summer transfer window, with Manchester United and Manchester City ‘very attentive’ to his performances.

That’s led Sporting’s management to speed up the process of renewing him and extending his deal. His current contract runs until 2027.

It’s been a path of steady progression for the winger, who first arrived on loan from Barcelona and has seen his influence grow since, particularly during the Ruben Amorim era.

That upward trend has continued this season, and the market is watching him, particularly from Manchester. Manchester City director of football Viana is the man who signed him for Sporting so obviously knows him well. In other words, it is him who may be driving the interest.

This, though, feels like something of a hype effort from Sporting. It would certainly be surprising if either of the Manchester clubs were willing to spend big sums to sign the winger, who has been good but not amazing and would command a big fee.

Even more so Manchester City, who already have Savinho, Jeremy Doku, Jack Grealish and Phil Foden and have just spent big on Omar Marmoush too.
