Newcastle United looked at AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw to improve their defence this season.

Last summer, claims from Italy stated Newcastle were willing to offer €30m while Milan wanted €40m. The Magpies reportedly waited for the Serie A side to lower the price. That didn’t happen and he’s still at the San Siro.

In October, Gazzetta dello Sport talked about Newcastle’s interest and insisted Milan would struggle to get €30-35m for Thiaw, with the Magpies having walked away from the earlier demands.

On New Year’s Eve, we covered claims from Italy that Eddie Howe’s side were still keen on the centre-back and Milan could use him plus money to sign Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali, which felt like a very unlikely scenario.

Calciomercato now provides the latest as Newcastle seem to have moved away from him.

They state Bayern Munich could make an approach for the Germany international in the summer window.

On Wednesday, Bayern manager Vincent Kompany was at the San Siro to follow Milan’s 1-1 Coppa Italia draw against Inter Milan. The German club face Inter in the Champions League later this month and Kompany took a closer look at the Nerazzurri.

Calciomercato state the coach also followed Thiaw, a player Bayern like a lot, closely.

The defender can leave the Rossoneri after this season and they are waiting to appoint a new sporting director to sort out his future. Thiaw is waiting for possible movements from Bayern Munich while being tempted by Bayer Leverkusen.
