Kevin De Bruyne should consider a move to Liverpool this summer when he departs Manchester City.
That’s according to the panel of journalists and analysts on Extra Time, whose comments discussing the outrageous idea have been relayed by Sporza.
De Bruyne is set to leave Manchester City at the end of the season, recently announcing his decision to fans in an open letter. His departure will bring an end to a ten-year, trophy laden spell with the club in which he has been the undisputed star of the show.
What happens next remains to be seen, with it unclear if De Bruyne intends to head to Saudi Arabia, MLS or somewhere entirely different.
He gave Manchester City fans a reminder of his enduring star power in the weekend win over Crystal Palace, with a starring role in the comeback win in which he bagged a goal and an assist in the eventual 5-2 victory.
It raised questions about whether the 33-year-old was making the right decision about his future, with it clear he’s still one of the best around, particularly now that he is injury free for the first time in a while according to the midfielder.
The Extra Time panel certainly believe that he’s got more left in him, and he should consider a move to Manchester City’s fierce rivals Liverpool, taking an example from Johan Cruyff.
“Why wouldn’t he go to Liverpool?” they wondered.
“This should actually have been the match immediately after the letter in which he announced that he was leaving City, and not that lame Manchester Derby,” said Filip Joos.
“It was like old times again. In the interview afterwards he also said that he was completely pain-free again,” Sam Kerkhofs observed.
“If this is the pain-free Kevin De Bruyne, I would always call him as another Premier League team, because he also said that he did not rule that out.”
“But not to Manchester United or Chelsea?”, Wesley Sonck wondered. “Or not to Liverpool. They are the direct competitors.”
“With Johan Cruyff as an example,” added Kerkhofs, remembering Cruyff leaving Ajax and joining Feyenoord at the end of his career.
“But he has been playing for City for so long. They are even talking about putting up a statue for him,” countered Sonck.
“But that doesn’t happen and you’re enjoying yourself in Liverpool”, concluded.
“I found it very striking that he didn’t rule it out. That he didn’t say that he can only play for Manchester City in the Premier League, because that’s the standard answer.”
“That’s how the letter was written. So, I think a phone call came.”
