Álvaro Carreras has gradually found his way since leaving Manchester United for Benfica a year ago.

The left-back has a €50m buyout clause, but the Red Devils can sign him by exercising their €20m option – in a summer window – which was agreed in the initial negotiations.

Carreras has also been linked to La Liga sides, including Barcelona and Real Madrid. On Tuesday, he starred in his side’s 5-4 defeat to Hansi Flick’s side in the Champions League and this got the Spanish media excited.

Thursday’s edition of A Bola relays that and points out Barca will find it difficult to exercise his €50m clause.

Benfica aren’t worried about losing the 21-year-old to Spanish clubs in the winter market. That isn’t the case with Manchester United, who have a buyback option.

The newspaper explains the defender, his family, agent, Benfica and his suitors want to know whether Manchester United plan to exercise the €20m clause.

The Spaniard wants to have better clarity over Ruben Amorim’s stance on using the clause. That would help him have more clarity about his future.

A Bola haven’t stated this, but maybe if Álvaro would accept a return to Manchester United then it’d be worth them offering something like €25m for a move this month. Benfica get a little extra, and the Red Devils get a reasonably priced “panic” signing.
