Everton earned £10m from the sale of Ben Godfrey in the summer transfer window and considering their difficult financial situation, it was a good sum from the Englishman’s exit.
Things haven’t been great for the defender at Atalanta so far and there’s already questions around his future.
Godfrey has played once in Serie A so far for La Dea but played on the right side of the midfield and not at centre-back. In the other two games, he has been left on the bench.
TuttoAtalanta have described the signing as an utter ‘flop’, stating that even using him on the right hasn’t yielded any good results. Even when there are no significant competitors in the centre-back role, he still isn’t playing for the club in that position.
The outlet are quite confident that the Englishman will be on sale in January. He was initially seen as an opportunistic signing because of his cheap transfer fee, but the feeling is that the player has ‘already failed’.
Godfrey has been ‘rejected’ by Gian Piero Gasperini and it will take time to get him up to speed to the Italian’s system. Gasperini is the all-powerful figure at Atalanta and the feeling is that he hasn’t been impressed at all.
Despite that, it’s still not so long since he arrived from Everton, where he’d been working in a Sean Dyche system. Perhaps a little patience is needed here.
