Back in November, Sunderland were reported as having a ‘concrete interest’ in Anderlecht’s Frank Acheampong, who can play both on the wing or as a full-back/wing-back.
The 23-year-old has been one of the Belgian side’s more important players this season, helping them get to the quarter finals of the Europa League with two goals against Zenit St-Petersburg, and is likely to be one of their summer sales.
Herman Van Holsbeeck, Anderlecht’s director of football said: “They know that these games are extremely important for them (the players). We decided the amount received in winter wouldn’t be enough to sell. We’ve now clarified things for the end of the season.”
Great performances in those games would benefit both player and club, and with Acheampong likely to have greater ambitions for his career than playing in Belgium, impressing managers like David Moyes will be top of his list.
However, for Sunderland to pull a transfer like this off, remaining in the Premier League will be incredibly important, as we cannot see Acheampong, who is currently playing European football, wanting to move to a Championship club.
Back in November, the price tag for the young forward was said to be €3m, but with his recent performances and two years left on his contract, Anderlecht are now likely to ask for double or even triple that this summer.
