Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek had been playing ‘with painkillers for weeks’ in an attempt to feature at the European Championships this summer.
That’s according to De Telegraaf, who cover the player’s situation following his surprise removal from the Netherlands squad earlier today.
Van de Beek had been set to feature for his country at the Euros this summer but was removed from the squad earlier today amid ongoing groin problems.
De Telegraaf, pick up on that today and explain that the Manchester United man appears to have been training and playing with painkillers ‘for weeks’.
That’s because ‘there was a chance’ the injury could get worse.
His plan is to now ‘revalidate’ so he can return fit for pre-season with Manchester United.
It comes as another major blow for the midfielder, who has endured a difficult first season at Old Trafford following his summer move from Ajax.
He had a chance to prove his doubters wrong this summer with the Netherlands, although he looked set for a substitute role at best under Frank de Boer.
Instead, he will now spend the summer recovering and looking to prove he’s worth a better chance at club level.
