As soon as José Mourinho was announced as becoming the next AS Roma manager starting next season, many players were linked with the club.
One of those, perhaps surprisingly, was David De Gea, who is currently playing second fiddle to Dean Henderson at Manchester United these days.
The Englishman took his chance with both hands when given the start back in March, conceding just four league goals in the past eight games.
This has left United with a big question mark over De Gea’s head, who probably won’t be thrilled at losing his first-choice goalkeeper spot to his teammate.
This is why Tiago Pinto, the club’s general director, is now ‘evaluating other profiles’, having to decide between either bringing in an experienced goalkeeper like Yann Sommer in or gambling on someone younger, like Atalanta’s Pierluigi Gollini.
While this is good news for Manchester United, who probably wouldn’t want to lose De Gea, it remains to be seen what the Spaniard’s plans are going forward and whether he has any desire to fight to regain his number one spot.
