West Ham United midfielder Edson Álvarez will be out for 5-6 weeks after suffering a 6cm tear in his hamstring.

That’s according to Fox Sports, who say the injury picked up in the clash with Jamaica while playing for Mexico at the Copa América is likely to see him miss West Ham pre-season.

They detail that Álvarez has suffered a 6cm tear in the posterior thigh of his left leg, with tests yesterday providing further details on the injury.

Mexico had been forced to wait to do further tests on Álvarez, with it explained earlier this week that swelling around the injury had prevented them from proceeding with the required scans and tests.

They’ve now been taken and revealed the 6cm tear in his leg, an injury that will rule him out of any activity for 5-6 weeks at least.

Those close to him revealed the West Ham player reported suffering a ‘strong puncture’ or ‘shot’ in left leg at the time of the injury, pain that caused him to immediately go to ground and ask for medical assistance.

He was escorted from the pitch by medical staff on a stretcher before then undergoing an initial assessment.

Mexico, West Ham and the player all decided that he can begin his recovery with the Mexican National Team so that he can avoid leaving his teammates at the Copa América and support them for as long as they’re in the tournament.
