It’s no big news that the Portuguese press loves talking to succesful players who once featured in the local league.

Right now there’s lots of headlines from an interview Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has given to Benfica TV, and Wolves star Ivan Cavaleiro is another one who gets a bit of attention.

Even though the attacker was never a big success for Benfica, he spent a couple of seasons at the club’s academy, where he made friends with a few players from the current squad.

One of them is the goalkeeper Bruno Varela, who has been struggling with a few mistakes and getting some stick from the local press, which seems to have less patience with him than with the other player for the position, Mile Svilar.

Wolves’ Cavaleiro has given an interview to O Jogo about his friend, claiming that what has been happening to Varela is perfectly normal and he will be able to turn things around.

“Bad times, we all go through it in football. Luckily, he overcame it and I think he’s in good form. I wish him all the best”, Cavaleiro told O Jogo.

As a mere detail in the story, Cavaleiro also spoke about his season at Wolverhampton, where he’s been having a great time.

“It’s one of my best seasons at the professional level. What matters most to me is being physically fit and playing regularly. I haven’t felt that way for two years now and the goals are an extra.”

The player was also asked about some Benfica youngsters, and said: “If everything goes well, Rúben Dias, Diogo Gonçalves and João Carvalho can go far. They are talented.”

It’s worth recalling that Wolves have reportedly made a bid for Carvalho recently, and although O Jogo had the chance to explore Cavaleiro’s interview more, they didn’t seem to have a particular interest on what the player thinks about the signing.
