Damien Duff has admitted joining Newcastle United from Chelsea turned out to be a disaster. The former Republic of Ireland international signed for Newcastle United in 2006 and spent three seasons with the North East club.

Speaking to FourFourTwo, Duff was asked why he chose to sign for Newcastle United despite claims Tottenham Hotspur were interested in him. At the time the now 37-year-old was playing for Tottenham’s London rivals Chelsea so Duff said he never gave much consideration to the move.

Duff revealed when Newcastle United came in for him he decided to move there because he already knew some players at the club, and wanted to succeed there. However, he accepts his move to Newcastle United didn’t go too well after failing to make an impact.

“I remember getting a message from Martin Jol, but I was a Chelsea fan after winning titles there so it was something I never looked at. I had friends at Newcastle – Scott Parker, Shay Given – and I wanted to give it a real go, but I went to Newcastle and had a disaster,” said Duff.

Duff made nearly 70 league appearances for Newcastle United, but never reproduced the form he showed whilst at Chelsea. Duff will be remembered for scoring an own goal on the last day of the season which confirmed Newcastle United’s relegation to the Championship, and subsequently he joined Fulham that summer.
