West Ham United have had the Declan Rice money burning a hole in their transfer pocket for longer than many thought they would.

Despite being linked with numerous players this summer, and seemingly starting transfer attempts for several options, the Hammers have been quiet on the done-deal front.

In recent days, claims have returned of serious attempts to take Edson Alvarez from Ajax. The Mexico international has long wanted a move to the Premier League, and the London club have arrived to provide that.

De Telegraaf, who are very reliable on Ajax matters, now report West Ham and the Amsterdam club have reached a ‘verbal agreement’ for the transfer.

West Ham will be paying £34m, and Alvarez is expected to fly to London tonight.

The 25-year-old has agreed personal terms on a deal lasting until 2028, and will now travel to go through the formalities of the transfer.

This signing will be a big step forward in West Ham’s summer and may help calm the building doubt around the club and manager David Moyes.
