Barcelona are looking to offload a whole group of their fringe players this summer, and there seems to be hope that Watford can help them with that. One of the player’s they want rid of is former Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen.
The Belgian defender’s time with Barcelona has been a tale of injuries, which is a situation the Catalan club probably should have seen coming. Spending the current season on loan at AS Roma, Vermaelen has only made 12 appearances.
Catalan newspaper Sport say Vermaelen’s Roma season has been an ‘ordeal’, just like his time at Barcelona as a whole.
The Italian club aren’t interested in a permanent deal, and Sport link Watford, but it seems more out of hope than expectation.
Watford were first linked to Vermaelen earlier this month by Belgian newspaper HLN, but there’s been nothing particularly concrete to back the stories up.
Barcelona would certainly like Watford to take the defender, who has a contract until June 2019, off their hands, but that’s not enough for a transfer.
