Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has insisted he was “immediately convinced” on a move to the club this summer as the opportunity to play in the Premier League was too good to refuse.
The Italian has been speaking to Serie A’s official radio show, relayed by Tuttomercatoweb, about his career so far and his time at Tottenham to date.
He joined Spurs in the summer in a €19m deal from FC Empoli as the club sought out the long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris.
After something of a shaky start, he now appears to be perfectly settled into life at the club, playing a key role with several impressive performances during their flying start to the season under Ange Postecoglou.
Things are very much going to plan for him and the club and he’s more than happy, insisting he was immediately convinced on the move to England when it was offered.
“I try to give 100% effort on the pitch to get to the best of my ability on the pitch,” he said.
“I want to give credit to Vincenzo Siciliano, with whom I am constantly in contact, we talk very often, I have found a person with whom I can grow professionally and personally.”
With Tottenham currently sitting at the top of the Premier League table, Vicario’s first season could end up being a special one.
Their 26 points from 10 games so far is the most any manager has achieved in his first 10 games in the competition and is Spurs’ best ever start to boot.
It also means that they are well on course to finish in the top four, with no team ever finishing outside the top four after such a start to the season since the league moved to 20 teams.
Qualifying for the Champions League has to be the target and Vicario seems to agree, admitting that it is one of his dreams moving forwards.
“My goal for now is to qualify for the European Championship with the national team; everything that comes will be a direct consequence,” he added.
“Wearing the blue shirt always makes you feel a thrill, singing the anthem is something special.
“It would be a pleasure to represent my national team. The coach makes choices for the common good of the team, but with every call-up there is always the hope of achieving ownership.
“The Champions League is another dream, it’s the next goal to conquer; it’s an ambitious competition and I’d like to experience it as a protagonist.”
