Tottenham defender Cristian Romero could find himself dropped for Argentina’s clash with Mexico on Saturday following the defeat to Saudi Arabia.

That’s according to reports in Argentina today, which say that the Tottenham man’s poor performance and fitness issues could see him swapped for Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez.

Romero was one of Argentina’s worse performers in their surprise loss to Saudi Arabia yesterday, struggling in the second half before being taken off in the 58th minute with an apparent injury issue.

That was reflected in the scoring following the game, with Ole handing him a 3/10, the worst score of anyone in the game and labelling it as his worst performance in an Argentina shirt.

Marca now cover Argentina’s return to training today and explain that Lionel Scaloni is thinking of changes for the clash with Mexico.

He’s currently focusing on the defence and the midfield, where he saw players who were ‘not physically well’, and Tottenham’s Romero was one of them.

He came into the tournament with an ankle injury picked up at Spurs and Scaloni now plans to ‘keep a close eye’ on him over the next couple of days.

The belief is that the Tottenham man is suffering from a ‘lack of rhythm’ due to the injury he picked up before travelling to Qatar.

If he does not ‘evolve favourably’ then the plan is to replace him with Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez.

That was the substitution Scaloni elected to make in the loss to Saudi Arabia and it seems the pressure is now on the Spurs defender to ensure it is not repeated ahead of Saturday’s game.
