At the beginning of May, when Louis van Gaal was still Manchester United manager before winning the FA Cup and receiving the boot, Vincent Janssen was linked with a move to Old Trafford.

It gave a chance for the Dutch media to get quotes from Janssen about Ruud van Nistelrooy: “He’s a big striker, I often watched him, I watched his movements. His goalscoring was unprecedented. How he completed for balls… Great! His runs, his speed, everything was together, he was a complete striker.”

Janssen is a big Van Nistelrooy fan, which meant being called up to the national squad and having him as an assistant coach was a real bonus. Who better to help ease Janssen into international football than the Dutch striker who’d become a hero for him?

It worked as well, in Janssen’s second Netherlands match, against England, Janssen got a goal and assist. In his next three games, Janssen scored another two.

However, as had been previously announced, Van Nistelrooy left his position, and so did another legendary striker, Marco van Basten. Danny Blind’s new assistants are both former goalkeepers, Fred Grim and Frans Hoek.

The Tottenham player obviously isn’t going to get the same words of wisdom he did from the former strikers, but told De Telegraaf: “In the short time we have worked together, Ruud was very valuable for me. I also asked him to award me the top scorer award at the Footballer of the Year gala. And if there is something, I know I can always reach him. He is a former world class striker who has a lot of experience.”
