Tottenham ‘would be willing’ to sign Gareth Bale this summer if Real Madrid agree to terminate his contract.
That’s what Sport report today, with them claiming that the La Liga giants are ready to make the Welshman a free agent to get him off the wage bill.
It’s explained that Bale has become a ‘headache’ for those in charge of the club after they tried to get rid of him last summer.
Bale is currently on a deal that is worth around €17m (likely to be after tax) per year and, if they were to keep him at the Bernabeu to the end of his contract in 2022, it would cost the club around €70m.
That’s a high price to pay for a player the club don’t want, most of all Zinedine Zidane, whose relationship with the forward has ‘rotted’.
Sport state there is also Brexit to consider, as once the United Kingdom fully leaves the EU, Bale will occupy one of the designated ‘foreign’ spots in the squad and Madrid would prefer to have that slot for someone else.
Madrid can afford to cut him free as the transfer fee they paid to sign him from Tottenham has been amortised and, according to the newspaper, Spurs would be happy to take him back if that happens.
They are said to have thought about re-signing Bale previously and securing him on a free transfer ‘would be a great deal’ for Daniel Levy.
Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett is considering all the options available to him and his client, with MLS and the Japanese J-League also a possibility at this stage.
Indeed, those two may be more attractive than Tottenham as they would allow Bale to continue enjoying football and ‘keep his billionaire cache’ suggesting Spurs may have some convincing to do if they want to get one of their own back from Spain.
