Ajax have again been criticised for their failure to adequately replace Antony following his move to Manchester United.

The Brazilian joined United in a €95m deal at the end of August following months of speculation about a move to Old Trafford.

He had been linked with the move throughout the summer, with negotiations initially not going well before Manchester United decided to spend big to give Erik ten Hag the man he wanted.

His departure was one of many for Ajax this summer, with the Dutch giants yet again seeing a huge overhaul of their squad as big names departed.

They ultimately brought in both Steven Bergwijn and Lucas Ocampos to strengthen the wide positions; Bergwijn arriving in a £28.13m deal from Tottenham and Ocampos on loan from Sevilla.

The latter was the direct replacement for Antony but is yet to score in nine games in all competitions and that has led to criticism from analyst Wim Kieft.

“Ajax felt that Manchester United were going to pay for Antony anyway,” Voetbal Primeur report him saying on Veronica Offside.

“Then you also have to make sure there is a good replacement. Because they waited so long, they ran out of time and just hired a player who doesn’t suit Ajax at all (Ocampos). That’s terrible, isn’t it?”
