Sunderland have shown interest in signing Bohdan Mykhaylichenko in the winter market.

That’s according to Ukrainian journalist Ihor Burbas, who has revealed the Black Cats are keen on the left-back.

A few Sunderland fans asked Burbas if he has any information on whether the English club are looking at the 26-year-old. This convinced him to share an update on his Telegram page, relayed by Terrikon.

The Ukraine international left Anderlecht to join Dinamo Zagreb last summer and made 15 appearances this season, managing two assists in the process.

Burbas claims the Croatian club are willing to cut ties with him, allowing Michael Beale’s side or another club to sign him for free this month. A move to the Stadium of Light will see Mykhaylichenko meet his compatriot, Nazariy Rusyn.

“I was once again bombarded with messages from Sunderland fans, who are really waiting for Bohdan Mykhailichenko. Yes, indeed, he can become a partner of Rusyn. I have such information,” he said.

“The English [club] are very interested in strengthening the position of the left defender with the Ukrainian, to whom his current club Dinamo are ready to give the status of a free agent.

“I know that in addition to the Black Cats, there is interest from another Championship club.”

Sunderland will have to respond quickly because the journalist claims Ukrainian side FC Polissya Zhytomyr are ahead of the Championship side in the transfer race.

“But, according to my information, the closest to signing the defender is Polissya, who offer the best personal terms,” Burbas explained.

This is relayed by Croatia’s Večernji List, who then explain why Dinamo Zagreb want to cut ties with the player.

While the rest of the team were disappointed with the 2-0 loss to FC Ballkani in the UEFA Conference League last October, Dinamo Zagreb manager Sergej Jakirović saw the left-back using his phone inside the dressing room immediately after the defeat.

Mykhaylichenko hasn’t featured for the Croatian club since then. Večernji List now claim Jakirović confirmed on Monday that his side will terminate the defender’s deal, which will allow him to join another club for free in January.
