Anderlecht CEO Peter Verbeke has described how defender Sergio Gomez begged for his move to Manchester City this summer.

Gomez joined City in a €13m move back in August, having spent the summer being linked to clubs around Europe.

The move to the Etihad came as something of a surprise one, with the player having garnered interest thanks to his tally of seven goals and 15 assists last season but none from clubs at the elite level like Manchester City.

It was initially believed that the 22-year-old would move to City and then be loaned out but that has not proven to be the case and Pep Guardiola has elected to have him as part of his first team squad this season.

That’s proven to be a smart decision, with the defender integrating seamlessly and already making seven appearances in all competitions.

He’s made the step up from Anderlecht easily and Verbeke has now revealed it was the defender who pushed for the move to happen in the first place.

“Sergio Gómez is a story apart,” he told Het Laatste Niuews.

“Actually, our intention was to sell Amuzu and keep Gómez, contractually it made the most sense.

“At some point it became clear that Gómez absolutely wanted to go to Manchester City, he was standing in my office in tears. Financially, we could also do a great business there.”
