Chelsea striker David Datro Fofana’s struggles at Union Berlin could be down to personal problems behind the scenes.

That’s according to the club’s sporting director Oliver Ruhnert, who has explained what has gone wrong for the youngster so far this season.

Fofana joined Chelsea in a €12m deal in January this year and spent the second half of last season at Stamford Bridge before being sent out on loan this season to help his development.

The plan had been for him to shine with Union Berlin, who could offer Champions League football after an impressive season in the Bundesliga last year.

He’s yet to impress, though, failing to score in any of his games so far this season, leading to some critical reviews in Germany.

Indeed, a recent report labelled him a 5/10 transfer so far, explaining that he had fallen into a performance hole and failed to see any of his efforts pay off as yet.

That’s naturally concerning for him and Chelsea, but Ruhnert is confident that he can turn things around eventually.

“Changing the results is not that easy for a young player,” he said.

“He also had private problems at times. A little something came together. He also lacks a bit of goal to give him self-confidence.”
