Leeds United midfielder Brendan Aaronson has admitted it’s been a “complicated year” for him as he struggles to get back to his best.

The American has been speaking after the USA’s clash with Germany, with his comments relayed by the Latin American edition of AS.

The 22-year-old is currently on loan at German side Union Berlin, who he joined from Leeds in the summer after just a year at Elland Road.

He moved to Leeds from RB Salzburg in a €32.84m deal in July last year but was unable to make much of an impact at the club as they were eventually relegated from the Premier League.

He moved to the Bundesliga in the hope of turning things around and getting back on track in a league that has often helped to develop some of the best talent in Europe.

That’s not proven to be the case for the Leeds man so far, though, with him struggling to make an impact at Union Berlin as they struggle to replicate last season’s impressive results.

That’s led to some criticism of him in Germany and he’s admitted it has been a difficult few months for him.

“For me it has been a complicated year,” he said.

“At one point my career seemed to go like this (points up) and now it seems to go a little like this (points down). I think football has ups and downs.

“I think the key is to have confidence, believe in yourself and That’s what I try to do to impact the game, help the team. It doesn’t matter if it’s defending or some aspects of attack, that’s what I want to do at the end of the day.”
