There are usually two aspects to signing a footballer.
One is pleasing the club where he has a contract and negotiating a transfer fee. The other is convincing the player that it’s the right move for him, and wages will always play at least some role in that.
Watford haven’t been convincing enough on the wages front with Sergio Rico, report Marca in their Thursday edition. The Spanish newspaper claims Watford have been knocked back by the goalkeeper because they didn’t offer him enough salary.
Marca explain that everyone at Sevilla expected Rico to be leaving the club this summer, but a transfer hasn’t yet materialised and time is starting to slip away.
Watford are said to have offered a loan with a purchase option, but the player himself knocked it back, say Marca, because the contract was for less money than what he’s currently on at Sevilla.
Rico earns €3m per season before tax at the La Liga club, a big contract for a goalkeeper and an even bigger one if he’s not going to be first choice.
