Southampton and Watford, you’re ‘intermediary’ Premier League clubs, at least according to Thursday’s edition of L’Equipe.

It could be worse, the word mediocre is often used when the European media want to talk down those outside of England’s biggest clubs.

The statement comes in an article on Saint-Etienne’s potential transfers during the current window.

ASSE’s window largely depends on what happens with William Saliba. The Ligue 1 side want to sell the defender and get the money now, but keep him on loan for a further season.

Saliba has shown a lot despite being just 18 years of age, and will be considered an impressive signing for whoever gets him.

Both Manchester clubs and Arsenal are keen, and they’re the big sides, with Southampton and Watford then getting a mention as also targeting the signing.

It could make sense for the player’s development if he moves to the Saints or Hornets, especially if they can show a way he’d fit into the team.

That would still likely require Saliba to be left on loan at ASSE for a season.
