Marseille tried to edge Duje Ćaleta-Car out of the club in the summer 2021 window, with there even being suggestions that if he insisted on staying then he’d be out of the picture.

The Croatian wasn’t ready to simply accept whatever Marseille wanted, probably partly because they had stopped him moving previously.

Despite all the claims, the 25-year-old played 38 matches for the French side last season, but they’ve wanted to part ways again with him this summer, hoping to get a reasonable fee from the Premier League.

That’s where Southampton come in, and journalist Sacha Tavolieri now reports Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side are in discussions with the defender’s representatives about a last minute move.

Southampton would see the Marseille player as a replacement for Jan Bednarek, who has been linked with both Aston Villa and West Ham in recent days and is thought to be closing in on an exit.

Ćaleta-Car has a contract lasting until June 2023, meaning the Ligue 1 club won’t be able to ask Southampton for too much.
