Glasgow Rangers defender Bruno Alves isn’t keen on slowing down his footballing career anytime soon.

The 36-year-old is currently with Portugal’s squad in the training camp for the World Cup, and has claimed he has no plans to retire, either at club or international level.

The subject was brought up in a press conference on Thursday, when Bruno Alves was asked if he aims to be the defender with most caps for the Portuguese national team.

Alves is currently behind Fernando Couto, who made 110 appearances, while he holds 95.

The Rangers defender responded: “I think of the present and helping the team, I don’t think about finishing my career or retiring from the national team. I will always be available to represent the country.” (via A Bola)

“Being the most capped defender is not my goal. I want to help Portugal achieve the objectives and help my teammates on the pitch and in training. That’s what motivates me.”

Signed from Cagliari on a free deal last summer, Alves has signed a two-year contract at the Scottish Premiership side, which runs until 2019. With Steven Gerrard now in charge at Ibrox, Bruno Alves will have a manager who is just a year older than him.

Gerrard may well choose to use some of Alves’ vast experience on the coaching side of things next, with the Portuguese international now at his eighth club.
