On May 1st, we covered claims from Turkey that Newcastle United will make an official attempt to sign Fenerbahçe star İrfan Kahveci in the summer window.
Two days later, journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu reported the Magpies have reached out to the 28-year-old’s agent. He also stated Sevilla are keen and would challenge Newcastle for the winger’s signature.
The Turkey international has starred for the Yellow Canaries this season, scoring 18 goals and registering 12 assists from 46 games. This, coupled with his contract expiring in 2025 makes him an attractive option.
Interested clubs include Newcastle, Sevilla, Rennes and Lazio, according to Star Gazetesi.
They say Kahveci can say ‘goodbye’ to Istanbul after this season and it can result in a ‘lottery win’ for the club. Fenerbahçe’s expectations are ‘quite high’ as they are requesting €20m for him.
Eddie Howe’s side and three other clubs have ‘entered the race’ to sign the attacker, and all of them will make contact with the Turkish club in the coming weeks.
It’s claimed Sevilla and Lazio will find it difficult to match Fenerbahçe’s demand, and this would be a boost for Newcastle.
That’s because the report states the Tyneside club are open to paying €20m for Kahveci. This should see Newcastle get ahead of others in the transfer race.
