Real Sociedad winger Brais Méndez has claimed his recent strike against Manchester United was revenge for former club Celta Vigo.

Méndez bagged the winning goal for the Spanish side at Old Trafford earlier this month, scoring from the penalty spot to secure a 1-0 in their first game of the Europa League group stages.

The Spaniard has enjoyed a flying start to life with his new club, having joined from Celta Vigo in a €14m deal in the summer as a replacement for Adnan Januzaj.

He’s already managed three goals in six games in La Liga, while his successful penalty against Manchester United is his only one in the Europa League so far.

The goal, and three points, marked a big moment for the Spanish side but also for him personally as it was his first in a European competition.

It seems it went further than that, though, as he considers it revenge for Manchester United’s win over former club Celta Vigo in the Europa League semi-finals in 2017.

“The goal at Old Trafford was a personal revenge,” he told Noticias de Gipuzkoa.

“It is the emblematic stadium. It was a bit of personal revenge for the defeat of Celta in those semi-finals.

“It was my debut in a new competition in Europe, in a big match, in a powerful stadium and scoring there is a mark.”
