Despite a contract situation at Manchester City still in need of being resolved, Ilkay Gündogan is currently focusing on finishing the season under Pep Guardiola.

The German midfielder is a free agent in the summer, and there have been many rumours about Barcelona being interested in signing him for next season.

That aside, he remains a member of the Germany national team, but it appears the Manchester City man will not be called up by Hansi Flick for the next international break.

It has nothing to do with his form in England, though, and the decision is down to a private family matter, which Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg expanded on on Monday.

Taking to Twitter, he stated ‘there was a phone call’ between Gündogan and Flick recently, and ‘both agreed that he would not be called up in March’.

The reason for that is the player ‘will become a father for the first time’ in the next few days, and therefore wants to be there for his family in the coming days rather than be away with the national team.

Regardless of this, the Manchester City star ‘wants to continue with Germany’, and this appears to be a temporary step back rather than a permanent one.
